Understanding ChatGPT

Friends’ thank you very much for taking out time from your busy schedule to read my blog(s). Sharing knowledge with you has become my passion now. I feel encouraged after reading your feedback in the comment’s column. Friends’ Everything, I do or say is PR. I’m delighted to share 129th Blog titled ‘Understanding ChatGPT’.  Interestingly, this blog is based on a chat yours truly had with ChatGPT about the points that should be taken care of in the blog “Understanding ChatGPT”.

Friends’ ChatGPT or Chat Generative Pre-Trained Transformer, based on the GPT-3.5 architecture is a chatbot powered by Artificial Intelligence. Launched on 30th November 2022, ChatGPT was created by OpenAI, an AI research and deployment company whose mission is to ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all of the humanity. OpenAI, a US based company, was established in 2015 by a group of individuals, including Elon Musk, Sam Altman, and three others.

Within a week of its launch ChatGPT gained one million users and according to the latest available data, ChatGPT currently has around 180.5 million users. The website generated 1.7 billion visits in October 2023, and I’m one of them. ChatGPT has emerged as the undisputed winner when it comes to popularity among AI chatbots over the last 12 months. ChatGPT offers a range of features that make it stand out from other chatbot solutions, including its ability to generate natural language responses, its ability to learn from conversations and adapt its responses accordingly, and its integration with other AI technologies such as sentiment analysis.

ChatGPT was developed through a two-phase process involving unsupervised pre-training followed by supervised fine-tuning. During the pre-training phase, the model was trained on a massive corpus of text utilizing unsupervised learning techniques, including language modeling and masked language modeling.

ChatGPT, which was trained on a vast amount of data using deep learning techniques to generate human-like responses to a wide range of questions and prompts, can answer questions on various topics, provide recommendations, engage in conversation and more. Think of it as an amped-up virtual assistant. Unlike Siri, Alexa or Google Assistant, ChatGPT remembers previous requests in a conversation, then adjusts accordingly.

ChatGPT works by attempting to understand a text input (called a prompt) and generating dynamic text to respond. It can do this because it's a large language model (LLM). It's essentially a super-sized computer program that can understand and produce natural language. The technology works by breaking down language inputs, such as sentences or paragraphs, into smaller components and analyzing their meanings and relationships to generate insights or responses.

ChatGPT is particularly well-suited for tasks such as language translation, text summarization, and conversation generation. With the ability to generate human-like text, ChatGPT is able to assist in many areas like customer service, content creation, language learning, research and many more.

ChatGPT can only work on one task and respond to one query at a time. If someone asks multiple questions at a time, ChatGPT may struggle to prioritize and slow down without responding to all the questions. Besides this, ChatGPT can find it difficult to understand the context and the nuances of human language.

To use ChatGPT, go to chat.openai.comsignup for free to  create an account and ask ChatGPT to reply to a question or perform a task. You can ask questions and seek suggestions on a variety of topics ranging from about buying a car to writing a resume.

ChatGPT is efficient at generating and summarizing text requests but it does have its downsides, though. It isn’t right 100% of the time, it can't answer questions asking for personal anecdotes or experience, because it doesn't have any. It can't answer questions about events or discoveries since 2021, because that's when its training data cuts off.

ChatGPT relies on the data it was trained on, which means it might not always have information on very recent topics or niche subjects. Additionally, its responses are generated based on patterns in the data, so it might occasionally produce answers that are factually incorrect or lack context.

ChatGPT follows a strict ethical code, part of which prevents the chatbot from providing criminal advice. You can't ask ChatGPT how to commit a crime, conceal evidence, lie to law enforcement, or conduct any other criminal activities.

One of the fundamental principles of effective interaction with ChatGPT is to formulate your prompts clearly and specifically. Avoid vague or overly broad queries. Instead, break down your questions or requests into concise and well-structured sentences. A well-crafted prompt increases the chances of receiving a relevant and informative response.

ChatGPT is a tool that benefits from experimentation. If you receive an unsatisfactory response, don't hesitate to iterate and refine your prompts. Experiment with different phrasings or ask follow-up questions to guide the conversation towards the information you seek. The use of Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF) is what makes ChatGPT especially unique. Through RLHF, human AI trainers provided the model with conversations in which they played both parts, the user and AI assistants, according to OpenAI.

ChatGPT's power is the ability to analyze queries and produce fully fleshed-out answers and results based on most of the world's digitally-accessible text-based information at least information that existed as of its time of training prior to 2021.

To conclude; ChatGPT is both easy to use and challenging to master. By understanding its capabilities, framing clear prompts, fact-checking information, and using it responsibly, users can harness the power of this AI tool effectively. Remember that the key to a successful interaction with ChatGPT lies in striking a balance between its user-friendly interface and the thoughtful approach you bring to the conversation. With these guidelines in mind, you can unlock the true potential of ChatGPT and make the most of your AI-powered conversations.
