Hon'ble Shri Narendra Modi ji's "Mann Ki Baat" - A PR Case Study

Thank you for landing on my BLOG PAGE.

Friends, I'm passionate about sharing knowledge with you, and your feedback has been a constant source of encouragement. As a firm believer that 'Everything I do or say is PR,' I'm driven to continuously create and share valuable content. I'm happy to share my 195th blogpost “PR Case Study - Mann Ki Baat: Hon’ble Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi’s Inspirational, Informational, Effective Communication to Promote National Unity and Pride”.

Friends, during the partition of India and the events that unfolded in the wake of the tumultuous division, Mahatma Gandhi attempted to address over 2.5 lakh refugees from Pakistan, urging them to maintain fortitude and patience. This occurred on November 12, 1947, during Gandhi ji’s first appearance on All India Radio.

Besides Mahatma Gandhi, other Indian leaders in the past (Prime Ministers) who had effectively used radio to communicate with the people include Shri Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister, who addressed the nation through All India Radio after independence, marking a historic moment with his "Tryst with Destiny" speech.

Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri also played a pivotal role in shaping India's future in external affairs and introduced the iconic slogan "Jai Jawan Jai Kisan" during the Indo-Pak war of 1965. He also used All India Radio to address the nation.

Smt. Indira Gandhi regularly used All India Radio to talk to the nation, especially during her four terms as Prime Minister from the late 1960s until her assassination in 1984. In fact, she highlighted the effectiveness of radio broadcasting for reaching illiterate populations, particularly for initiatives like family planning education.

Friends, Radio is no longer an antique piece. It was on the brink of becoming one almost a few decades ago when people across India were recklessly pursuing new sources of instant gratification through screens. However, things changed dramatically when Shri Narendra Modi assumed the high office of the Prime Minister of India. For his monthly broadcast, Mann Ki Baat, he chose radio - perhaps as a mission to restore its status as a powerful communication medium.

Radio, once relegated to an antique on shelves, was revitalized as a tool for spreading awareness, and the people of India embraced this change. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, with his deep connection to the grassroots, understood the power of a simple, innovative strategy to emotionally and intellectually engage the vast majority, particularly the economically marginalized.

Friends, Modi Ji’s approach worked, as hundreds would gather around radios for his monthly broadcast. Modi ji uses the platform to highlight the achievements and unique survival strategies of ordinary people, celebrating their successes and sharing key messages regardless of the challenging terrains they inhabited. For Modi ji, radio is a simple yet powerful medium that connected both the rich and the poor. This record-breaking, more than a decade-long initiative has become one of the largest such experiments in the world.

Friends, Mann Ki Baat, which began in 2014, has become a notable example of using radio to connect with citizens, especially in remote areas. A survey conducted by the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Rohtak reveals that at least 23 crore people have regularly 'listened to or watched' Modi ji’s monthly radio broadcast and over a billion have listened to it at least once.  With over 23 crore regular listeners, it has become a colossal platform for sharing inspiring stories and messages directly with the people.

Radio’s accessibility and widespread reach as a tool for the common man allowed our hon’ble Prime minister to take his Mann Ki Baat beyond boundaries, which was a key factor in elevating him to a position of prominence and recognition. Modi ji was indeed finding solutions to unify a country known for its diversity, while his medium of communication was designed to ignite a sense of togetherness among people from different backgrounds.

The Mann Ki Baat radio show, hosted by Shri Narendra Modi, effectively utilizes the 5 Ws and 1 H (who, what, when, where, why, and how) in communication to serve its purpose. Here's how:

ü  Who: The show clearly identifies the speaker (Shri Narendra Modi) and features various individuals, including ordinary citizens, innovators, and experts, showcasing their stories and achievements.

ü  What: The program focuses on a wide range of topics, including social issues, national development, and inspirational stories, providing valuable information and insights to listeners.

ü  When: The show is broadcast regularly, typically on the last Sunday of every month, allowing listeners to anticipate and prepare for the program.

ü  Where: The program is broadcast on All India Radio and other platforms, reaching a vast audience across the country, including rural and remote areas.

ü  Why: The show aims to promote national development, inspire citizens, and foster a sense of community, highlighting the importance of individual contributions to the nation's progress.

ü  How: The program uses storytelling, interviews, and discussions to convey messages, inspire listeners, and provide practical examples of how individuals can make a positive impact.

By incorporating these essential elements of PR, Mann Ki Baat has become an effective platform for Shri Narendra Modi to connect with citizens, promote national development, and inspire positive change. Mann Ki Baat popularity and impact demonstrate the power of effective communication in achieving its purpose.

Friends, my 195th blog explores how Mann Ki Baat promotes national unity and pride, inspires citizens, and fosters a sense of community. Mann Ki Baat has several unique aspects that set it apart from other radio programs or public addresses:

  • Direct Connection with Citizens:  Provides a direct platform for the Prime Minister to connect with citizens, sharing his thoughts, ideas, and vision for a better India.
  • Informal and Conversational Tone: Unlike traditional public addresses, Mann Ki Baat features an informal and conversational tone, making it more relatable and engaging for listeners.
  • Storytelling and Real-Life Examples: Uses storytelling and real-life examples to convey messages, making complex issues more accessible and inspiring.
  • Focus on Positive Storytelling: Focuses on positive storytelling, highlighting the achievements and contributions of ordinary citizens, which inspires and motivates listeners.

These unique aspects have contributed to the popularity and effectiveness of Mann Ki Baat, making it a flagship program of the Government of India.

A Public Relations Theory Perspective: From a theoretical standpoint, Mann Ki Baat aligns with established PR frameworks. As outlined by PR scholars James E. Grunig and Todd Hunt, the program primarily operates under the Public Information Model. This is a one-way communication model where the primary purpose is to disseminate information from the source to the public. However, the program also incorporates elements of the Two-Way Asymmetric Model, where the communicator uses feedback (citizen stories, calls, suggestions) to make their messages more persuasive and effective, but the power dynamic remains with the source. This blend makes the communication feel personal and participatory, while serving the government's objectives of informing and inspiring the public.

Friends, as an Author, Blogger and Story teller, I’ve long emphasized the power of authenticity and direct connection in public communication. Mann Ki Baat exemplifies this by bypassing traditional media filters and establishing a personal, relatable channel with the public, a strategy that is crucial for building lasting trust and positive perception.
