An AI Beginner's Guide For PR Professionals
Thank you for landing on my blog post.
Friends, I’m passionate about sharing knowledge with you, and your feedback is a constant source of encouragement. I firmly believe that "Everything I do or say is PR," a philosophy that drives me to continuously create and share valuable content. I am happy to share my 243rd Blog Post “An AI Beginner's Guide For PR Professionals”.
Friends, the artificial intelligence market has transformed from a tech novelty into a set of everyday household tools. If you feel overwhelmed trying to keep track of which tool does what, you are not alone. You’ve likely heard these platforms mentioned by friends and family but as PR professionals, we truly need to know them inside out. Here are the 5Ws and H of six major AI platforms to get you up to speed.
1. ChatGPT:
The All-Rounder Pioneer
- Who made it? OpenAI, an AI research company
backed heavily by Microsoft.
- What is it? The world's most famous
general-purpose chatbot. It acts like a highly knowledgeable assistant
that can brainstorm ideas, write emails, edit text, solve complex logic
problems, and even generate images.
- When did it start? It originally launched in late
2022, kicking off the modern AI boom.
- Where can you use it? On any web browser (chatgpt.com)
or via its official mobile apps for iPhone and Android.
- Why should an
everyday user use it? It is
the ultimate "Swiss Army knife" of AI. If you want a tool that
is reliably good at almost everything, from planning a travel itinerary to
drafting a difficult message to your landlord, ChatGPT is the easiest
starting point.
- How does it work? You type a prompt in normal
language, and it predicts the best response based on patterns it learned
from vast amounts of data. It features distinct modes, including a
"Thinking" mode for slow, deep math or logic problems.
2. Google
Gemini: The Super-Connected Assistant
- Who made it? Google.
- What is it? Google's primary AI assistant.
It is deeply connected to everything else Google owns, meaning it can
interact with your Gmail, Google Docs, Google Drive, and YouTube.
- When did it start? It was originally introduced in
2023 under the name "Bard" before being rebranded and upgraded
to Gemini.
- Where can you use it? At gemini.google.com, built
directly into the Google apps on your phone, and as the default assistant
on most newer Android smartphones.
- Why should an
everyday user use it? It is
an incredible tool if you are already a Google user. You can ask Gemini to
"summarize the flight confirmation email in my Gmail" or
"find a recipe video from my YouTube history," making it highly
practical for sorting through your personal digital clutter. It also has a
massive memory for reading massive files or books all at once.
- How does it work? It processes text, images,
audio, and video simultaneously. Because it is connected to Google’s live
search engine, it easily pulls up real-time information and web links.
3. Claude:
The Creative Writer & Professional
- Who made it? Anthropic, a company founded by
former AI researchers who left OpenAI to focus heavily on AI safety and
ethics.
- What is it? An AI assistant widely
celebrated for having the most natural, human-sounding writing style of
any chatbot on the market.
- When did it start? Early 2023.
- Where can you use it? At claude.ai or through its
official mobile apps.
- Why should an
everyday user use it? If
you need something written that doesn’t sound like a robot wrote it,
Claude is your best choice. It is fantastic at writing cover letters,
editing stories, analyzing heavy text documents, and showing genuine
warmth in its conversational tone. It is also a favorite for people
learning to code.
- How does it work? You chat with it just like
ChatGPT, but it is built with strict safety guidelines to prevent it from
generating harmful or wildly inaccurate information. It also features a
workspace view called "Artifacts" that shows your text edits or
designs in a neat window side-by-side with your chat.
4. Meta AI:
The Social Media Companion
- Who made it? Meta, the parent company behind
Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Threads.
- What is it? A built-in virtual assistant
designed to live right inside the social media and messaging apps millions
of people already use every day.
- When did it start? Late 2023, with massive rollouts
and upgrades continuously expanding its reach.
- Where can you use it? Look for the blue-purple ring
icon in the search bars of WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook, or visit
meta.ai on a computer.
- Why should an
everyday user use it?
Convenience. You do not need to download a new app or visit a special
website. If you are planning a group dinner in a WhatsApp group chat, you
can tag @Meta AI right there and ask it to suggest nearby Italian
restaurants. It can also instantly generate fun, animated images while you
chat.
- How does it work? It uses Meta's own AI brain and
is quietly woven into your feeds and text boxes so it can answer questions
or create pictures without forcing you to leave your social apps.
5.
Perplexity: The AI Fact-Finder & Research Engine
- Who made it? Perplexity AI, a dedicated tech
startup founded by former engineers from Google and OpenAI.
- What is it? An "answer engine"
designed to completely replace traditional search engine browsing. Instead
of giving you a list of blue links to click on, it reads the web for you
and writes out a cohesive answer.
- When did it start? Late 2022.
- Where can you use it? At perplexity.ai or via its
mobile apps.
- Why should an
everyday user use it? If
you are researching a topic like comparing the best cell phone plans or
looking up a medical symptom, Perplexity is unmatched. It tells you the
answer and places small, clickable footnote numbers next to every single
sentence so you can instantly verify which website the information came
from.
- How does it work? When you ask a question,
Perplexity instantly searches the live internet, reads the top articles,
filters out the spam, and synthesizes the findings into a clean report
with clear citations.
6. Grok:
The Real-Time Social Insider
- Who made it? xAI, an artificial intelligence
company founded by Elon Musk.
- What is it? An AI chatbot fundamentally tied
to X (formerly Twitter). It has a reputation for being slightly more
rebellious, humorous, and unfiltered than its competitors.
- When did it start? Late 2023.
- Where can you use it? Built directly into the X
platform (available to premium subscribers) or at x.ai.
- Why should an
everyday user use it? If
you want to know what is happening in the world right this second,
Grok is uniquely positioned. Traditional search engines might take hours
to index a breaking news story, but Grok looks at millions of real-time
posts on X to tell you why a topic is trending immediately.
- How does it work? It processes live text streams
from X to analyze public sentiment and breaking news. It also has a toggle
switch allowing you to choose between a standard "Fun Mode"
(which uses a touch of sarcasm) and a "Regular Mode."
