"Vande Mataram" means "I bow to thee, Mother" or "I salute the Motherland". "Vande" is a Sanskrit word meaning "I bow to" or "I salute", while "Mataram" means "Mother".

Friends, Vande Mataram is more than just a slogan. It's a rallying cry, a declaration of love, and a testament to India's struggle for independence and a strong PR tool to communicate our love for Maa Bharati. Written by Late Shri Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay around 1875-76, it was later incorporated into his novel "Anandamath" in 1882. The Noble Laureate Rabindranath Tagore first sang it publicly at the Indian National Congress session in Calcutta in 1896. Vande Mataram gained prominence during the Swadeshi movement, becoming the anthem of the freedom struggle against British rule.

Today, Vande Mataram holds immense significance across India, sung at government functions, schools, and patriotic gatherings, fostering national pride. The Indian government is celebrating the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram to foster an impactful movement to connect citizens, especially the youth and students, with the song’s original revolutionary spirit so that the song is embedded in the hearts of the next generation. The Indian Parliament also dedicated a special session on Vande Mataram on December 8, 2025.
