it’s heartening to know that Durga Puja was recognized by UNESCO as an
Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in December 2021. Specifically, on
December 15, 2021, the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the
Intangible Cultural Heritage officially listed 'Durga Puja in Kolkata' on its
Representative List. This achievement made Durga Puja the first Asian festival
to receive this major distinction.
This
recognition highlights Durga Puja as a cultural phenomenon that demonstrates
India's rich heritage, artistic teamwork, and community involvement. The
festival has become a massive stage for social and artistic activities, drawing
thousands of artisans, workers, and designers together to create intricate
idols, massive pandals, and other decorations.
The Essence of Durga Puja: Divinity
and Devotion
Durga Puja, one of India’s most vibrant and revered festivals, is a grand celebration of the triumph of good over evil. Dedicated to Goddess Durga, the embodiment of divine feminine energy, the festival holds deep spiritual, cultural, and social significance, particularly in West Bengal, Odisha, Assam, and other parts of India. From its mythical beginnings to its modern-day global celebrations, Durga Puja beautifully combines devotion, artistry, and community spirit.
Origin of Durga Puja
The
roots of Durga Puja lie in Hindu mythology, primarily the ancient text ‘Devi
Mahatmaya’, a part of the ‘Markandeya Puran’. This text tells the story of

Mahishasur.

gods. To stop him, the gods combined their energies to create Goddess Durga, a
powerful yet kind deity armed with divine weapons. After a nine-day battle,
Durga defeated Mahishasur on the tenth day. This victory of righteousness over
evil is celebrated during Durga Puja, a five-day festival that ends with
Vijayadashami/Dussehra.
The
festival follows the lunar calendar, usually taking place in September or
October during the Hindu month of Ashwin. The ‘Devi Mahatmya’ describes Durga
as Shakti—the cosmic force of creation, preservation, and destruction—making
her worship a celebration of feminine power and divine balance.
History of Durga Puja
While
the mythical origins of Durga Puja date back millennia, its evolution as a
large public and community festival is more recent. Early references to Durga
worship appear in Vedic texts, but the structured festival we see today started
to develop around the medieval period.
The origins of Durga Puja date back to the 16th century when wealthy
landowners, or zamindars, in Bengal began organizing grand celebrations.
According to historical records, Raja Kangshanarayan of Taherpur or Bhabananda
Mazumdar of Nadiya is believed to have organized the first Sharadiya Durga Puja
in Bengal in 1606. Initially, it was a family tradition, but over time, it
evolved into a community festival, known as Sarbojonin Durga Puja, where people
from all backgrounds came together to celebrate.

during the British era, with high-ranking officials attending and participating
in the celebrations. The East India Company even performed a thanksgiving Puja
in 1765 to appease its Hindu subjects. As the capital of British India shifted

transformed into a mass cultural event, with pandals featuring intricate
artistry and themes reflecting social, political, and environmental issues. Today, the festival is celebrated with great fervor across India,
particularly in West Bengal, Odisha, Assam, and Tripura.

Durga Puja is a celebration of
feminine power, motherhood, and the triumph of good over evil. The rituals and
customs of Durga Puja reflect this symbolism, with devotees worshiping the
goddess and her various forms viz. Devi Lakshmi and Devi Saraswati along with
Lord Kartikeya and Lord Ganesh.

seek Durga’s blessings for prosperity. Each day is dedicated to a
different form of the goddess.

showcases unparalleled craftsmanship in idol-making, pandal designs, and
performances like the Dhunuchi dance and Sindoor Khela. It is a time when
art, music, and literature come together, as communities create temporary
masterpieces.

Significance: Durga Puja unites people across caste, class, and religion,
fostering a strong sense of community. It is a time for family reunions,
feasting, and community bonding. The festival also empowers women, as it
celebrates the feminine divine and encourages their active role in all
festivities.

Impact: The festival significantly boosts the economy, especially in West
Bengal, where artisans, vendors, and businesses flourish. From idol makers
in Kumartuli to food stalls and clothing markets, Durga Puja fuels local
economies.
Present Status of Durga Puja
Today,
Durga Puja is a global phenomenon, celebrated not only in India but also by
Indian communities across the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia,
and beyond. In West Bengal, it remains the grandest festival, with Kolkata
alone hosting thousands of pandals, each competing in creativity and scale.
Modern pandals often use themes addressing contemporary issues like climate
change, women’s empowerment, or global events, thus blending tradition with
innovation.

modernity into a vibrant tapestry of devotion and creativity. From its origins
